CBSE Removes ‘Additional Subject’ Option for Private Candidates:What NEET Aspirants Need to Know

Late in 2025, CBSE announced that private candidates will no longer have the option to take an additional subject in the Class 10 and 12 board exams from 2026. This policy shift has caused concern, especially among NEET aspirants, repeaters, and students who had planned their academic progress around this now-ended flexibility. In 2025 alone, over 2,700 private candidates had registered for the additional subject option.

What Changed & Why It Matters

Until now, private candidates could take an additional subject (one for Class 12, up to two for Class 10) to improve their overall profile, meet eligibility for competitive exams or add backup options.

  • Students can no longer rely on additional subjects to boost board marks or add alternative subject combinations (for example, adding Mathematics to switch streams).
  • Academic planning for drop years or retakes which depended on that option must be revised.
  • It increases pressure on core subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which heavily influence NEET preparation.

Impacts on NEET Aspirants

This change touches many corners of how students prepare:

  • Higher stakes in 11th & 12th board exams: Without the backup of an additional subject, students must excel in their main subjects right from the start.
  • Reduced flexibility for private or repeater students: The option to “improve” via another subject is closed, so retakes must focus solely on existing subjects.
  • Delay or change in strategy: Some students might have to change their plans, for instance, opting for strong coaching to prevent any weak links in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

How to Stay Prepared & Adapt

If you’re gearing up for NEET or currently preparing, here are useful steps in light of this change:

  • Strengthen core subjects early – Don’t wait to catch up; Physics, Chemistry, Biology must be strong.
  • Ensure consistent board performance – Internal assessments, revisions, and mock tests become even more important.
  • Plan without dependence on policy options – Backup strategies should be within subjects you already study.
  • Monitor CBSE & NTA updates – Sometimes policies shift; staying informed helps you adapt quickly.
