The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India has recently revised its seat matrix for medical colleges, leading to a number of institutions losing seats, some even being given zero seats for NEET-UG this year. These changes are not arbitrary: they stem from compliance checks, infrastructure issues, faculty deficits, or regulatory lapses. Why Some Colleges Lose Seats
Medical colleges lose seats (or recognition) when they fail to meet NMC’s regulatory norms. These norms cover multiple areas: availability of qualified faculty (professors, unit heads), sufficient hospital facilities, adequate infrastructure in laboratories and classrooms, proper patient inflow, transparent attendance systems, and upkeep of required equipment. If audits or inspections reveal serious deficiencies, the NMC may reduce the number of sanctioned seats, sometimes significantly or even assign zero seats for that admissions cycle. Noncompliance with reporting requirements or submission of false information also plays a role.
States & Colleges Affected
Gujarat is one of the most affected states. In its recent revision, the NMC cut 250 seats in various colleges for the 2025-26 cycle. Notable changes include all 150 seats lost at Swaminarayan Institute of Medical Science in Kalol due to serious regulatory issues. Colleges in Bharuch and Amreli also saw reductions of 50 seats each.
Similarly, in Madhya Pradesh, about 300 MBBS seats dropped this year. Some private colleges lost recognition or had portions of their seats withdrawn. There are also reports of nine colleges across states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP and Chhattisgarh being listed with zero MBBS seats for NEET-UG 2025. These changes are not uniform as in many states some institutions gained seats or new colleges were approved after meeting all norms. But the trend is clear: noncompliance is being penalized.
What Students Should Check Before Choosing a College?
Given these shifts, aspirants must be careful while shortlisting colleges:
- Accreditation & Recognition: Always verify whether a college is listed on the NMC’s official site and whether its seats are active.
- Seat status: See whether there are any recent notices of seat reductions or zero-seat allocation. Colleges losing seats sometimes publish this or students discover it during counseling rounds.
- Infrastructure & faculty data: Check if the college meets standards for faculty strength, labs, hospital attachments and clinical exposure. These are often part of NMC assessment reports.
- Recent inspections / audit results: Search for the latest NMC assessments or “college assessment reports” to see whether warnings or deficiencies have been reported.
- Past years’ seat matrix trends: Compare seat matrix data from previous years to see if a college has been stable or frequently under scrutiny.
